Ice filled Antonius’ stomach as he remembered Gehn’s fatal broadcast. These past months on Julius had been frustrating. Imperial forces had been successful initially, but that success had slowly been eroding, and now was in full retreat. Gehn’s treachery had laid the plans of the Imperials bare, and the forces of Chaos now hounded them. The Tallarn 87th had been all but wiped out, and other Guard forces were faring little better. Worse still, the Orks devoted all their energies against Imperials, and never fought the Archenemy. Collusion between the aliens was all that was keeping the Imperials from organizing a breakout and smashing enemy lines. The Doom Eagles had smashed through the Ork lines with ease, only to be halted in their tracks by Chaos, and the 87th had held against Chaos for weeks only to be overrun by a green wave of Orks. The situation was dire. Captain Ganendra estimated that Imperial forces could hold out for another week at best without relief. Only victory on Iperin would free reinforcements for the Julius front. Antonius prayed to the Emperor for salvation, for without victory there was none.
