Gehn took cover behind a low ridge.  His squad formed up behind him.  Stray shots whizzed around them.  The other squads of 4th Company had already taken standard positions in the forest.  Gehn watched as 5th squad opened fire on the traitors from their position, but their shots mattered little.  He sneered.  The fool boy had a poor line to the traitors.  How a child barely out of scout armour had made Sergeant in the honored 4th company was beyond him.  Captain Ganendra’s voice broke in over the vox.

“Six, One.  Move forward and push towards the hill.  Phalanx Closed formation.  We will cover you.  Have faith, and the Emperor will protect you.”  Was he serious?

“One, Six.  Confirm advance in a Phalanx Closed formation.”  Gehn barked.

“Confirmed.” Ganendra replied.

“But that leaves us…”

“THAT IS AN ORDER!  Go!  Before it’s too late!”

Gehn cut the link and cursed.  “Squad, move out in a… Phalanx Closed formation.  We take the hill.”

“FOR THE EMPEROR!” The rest of the squad shouted.  Gehn did not join the battlecry.  Ganendra must have air support coming to aid such a desperate move.  Gehn vaulted over the short ridge, running full tilt.  The rest of the squad closed in, running just as fast.  A huge crab like walker emerged from behind the hill.  Gehn swore loudly and fired his Combi-Melta shot.  The Defiler’s leg smoked, and it shrieked.  Suddenly there was a flash and Gehn felt himself on the ground.  His body was in incredible pain.  The last thing he heard before darkness took him was a call for a general retreat over the vox.
